Title: FAMU Hospital Babies Project Commences: Documenting a Legacy of Unique Beginnings

Tallahassee, FL, [7-2-2024] – The FAMU Hospital Babies Project, led by Project Coordinator Shauna Smith, is officially underway with the mission to identify and document individuals born in and staff who worked at the historic FAMU Hospital, the sole HBCU hospital of its time, 1951-1971.

Ms. Smith has made significant progress, identifying approximately 45 babies and four dedicated staff members associated with FAMU Hospital. The project aims to collect data, document oral histories and host events to commemorate the distinctive experience and of being born in and working in this iconic institution, preserving the rich legacy for future generations.

The project welcomes collaboration from FAMU university members, community volunteers, and researchers interested in contributing to this important initiative. Co-collaborators are encouraged to join efforts in expanding the project’s scope, and researchers are sought to assist in identifying and engaging potential funding sources in 2024, Tallahassee’s bicentennial.
